Annotating/close reading texts

Here’s a list of things that you guys brainstormed in 5th and 7th periods:

Active reading/close reading/annotation/taking notes:

  • Highlighting/underlining/marking significant passages/quotes
  • Interpreting the text
  • Making inferences/predictions
  • Questioning the text, author/bias
  • Looking for literary devices (allusions, similes, metaphors…)
  • Finding theme/style of writer
  • Making inferences/predictions
  • Writing your thoughts, questions, observations, opinions (based on topic and/or author)
  • Defining unknown words/terms
  • Making connections to self, other stuff, media, etc.
