Poetry Stations Exercise

Fill in your poetry handout with the poem stations below.


Station 1             

"Mother to Son, Harlem" by Langston Hughes


Station Directions:

  • Pick up a copy of the poem(s). Make sure you have a pen/pencil.
  • Read poem silently to yourself.
  • Listen to poems being performed on videos provided. 
  • Take notes as you listen, circle important words, record your reaction to the poems, pay attention to the themes that are central in the poem. Highlight/put a star next to lines that the speaker accentuates. 
  •  As a group, discuss the themes of the poems and fill out your graphic organizer. What quotes or words stuck out to you? What themes does the poem have that we also see in Fences?

Station 2

"Knock Knock" by Daniel Beaty

Station Directions:

  • Pick up a copy of the poem. Make sure you have a pen/pencil.
  • Read poem silently to yourself.
  • Watch the performance of the poem. 
  • Take notes as you listen, circle important words, record your reaction to the poem, pay attention to the themes that are central in the poem.
  • As a group, discuss the themes of the poems and fill out your graphic organizer. What quotes or words stuck out to you? What themes does the poem have that we also see in Fences?

Station 3

From the House of Yemanjá by Audre Lorde

Station Directions:

  • Pick up a copy of the poem. Make sure you have a pen/pencil.
  • Read poem silently to yourself.
  • Choose a member (or members of your group, if you want to share the reading) to read the poem out loud to the group. 
  • Take notes as you listen, circle important words, record your reaction to the poem, pay attention to the themes that are central in the poem.
  • As a group, discuss the themes of the poems and fill out your graphic organizer. What quotes or words stuck out to you? What themes does the poem have that we also see in Fences?
